Christopher Allen Lloyd was born on October 22, 1938 in Stamford, Connecticut. His parents were Ernie and Marjorie Beecher. Christopher's family also included an older brother named David Barry Sr., who became a doctor; the two brothers are of English and German descent.
He attended Staples High School with fellow actors Robert Downey Jr.. During his school years he took part in drama productions such as 'The Skin of Our Teeth' and 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. He graduated from Yale University cum laude with a degree in Russian history before doing further studies at the Yale Drama School. In 1965, Lloyd joined The Acting Company to tour American military bases overseas as part of their Shakespeare program that brought theatre arts to those serving abroad for more than 40 years until 2008.
In 1966, following his appearance on Broadway as Dr. Pangloss alongside Zero Mostel (1969) he gained recognition for playing Harry Dunne opposite Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka in "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory". A year later he co-starred alongside Michael Caine and Susannah York in Sidney Lumet’s critically acclaimed crime thriller “The Morning After” which earned him a Golden Globe nomination for best supporting actor.
